The Oscar-winning actor made the claim in response to podcast host Joe Rogan  complaining that Americans were 'completely trapped in the two-party system’.

'We have the same sort of situation, but we have a very interesting thing that’s happening in Australia at the moment, which is the rise of independents,’ Crowe countered.

'The main parties have to deal with the fact those independents have to bring a non-party-line series of points to the argument.

'And it’s working well. It’s working for us.
In that it’s making both of the main parties re-examine who they are and what they stand for.

Rogan mused 'we could use that here, for sure’,
highlighting how US politics is completely dominated by the Democrat and
Republican parties.

There are other parties, including the Green, Libertarian,
and Reform parties, but these receive vanishingly few votes in comparison.

Independent candidates can also stand and have been known to perform well on occasion.

Civil rights opponent George Wallace ran a third-party
campaign in the 1968 US election which saw him garner 10
million votes and take five southern states, while another disaffected Democrat, Strom Thurmond, in 1948 carried four southern states on a similarly racist platform but with only a million votes.

The nephew of a president, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., was
poised to get on the ballot in dozens of states as an independent candidate before he pulled out
and backed Republican Donald Trump. 

He has now been appointed Health secretary in Trump’s
incoming cabinet. 

Trump himself had previously belonged to the Reform Party.

The former New York property developer had even considered running for president
in the 2000 election under the banner of that movement – formed by former third-party presidential candidate Ross Perot, who won 19 per cent of the popular vote in 1992 but gained no
electoral college votes.

Perot was the most popular minority party candidate since former Republican president Teddy
Roosevelt in 1912 ran as the Bull Moose Party
candidate – carrying six states including California and
coming second ahead of Republican William Taft.

Australia has seen a rise in recent years of nominally independent politicians who have taken votes away from
the two traditional parties of Labor and the Liberal-National coalition

This situation is helped by a strong Green party who now have
12 senators and four members in the House of Representatives.

Meanwhile, independent candidates who run on strong climate
platforms but are fiscally conservative have been labelled 'teal’ candidates.

This is because they have combined their 'green’ views on climate with the traditional 'blue’ approach of the centre-right Liberal Party.

Zali Steggall became the first Teal independent to achieve
huge success when she ousted former prime minister Tony Abbott
in his seat in Sydney’s northern beaches at the 2019 election.

In similar fashion, Monique Ryan won the traditionally Liberal seat from former treasurer Josh Frydenberg at the 2022 election. 

She was one of seven Teals elected, swelling the lower house crossbench to 15, with this tally including the four Greens,
three conservative independents and progressive Andrew Wilkie.

Crowe’s three-hour conversation with Rogan, which was first aired in August, has recently resurfaced
in Teal social media adverts.

They are being pushed by Melbourne philanthropist Simon Holmes à Court,
who founded Climate 200, which has given campaign funding to some Teal candidates.

Not all independents elected in 2022 were Teals, however.

Dai Lee, a former state Liberal candidate, defeated former
Labor frontbencher and former NSW Labor premier Kristina Keneally in the south-west Sydney seat of
Fowler.

And, of course, maverick Bob Katter who has just celebrated
50 years in parliament, spending 20 years as a Queensland state MP before serving
the past three decades in federal parliament as the
MP for the regional far north Queensland electorate of Kennedy. 

Among his many mad-hat policies over the years include a bid to teach school kids how to fire rifles and a desire to build a missile shield across northern Australia.

The House of Representatives crossbench grew to 16 in late 2022 when Andrew Gee quit the Nationals in protest at its opposition to the Indigenous Voice to Parliament. 

The Greens and independents make up 11 per cent of the 151-member lower house – the highest
proportion of non major party MPs since Federation in 1901.

Do Greens and crossbenchers who claim that transparency and integrity is at the heart of their
reason for entering Parliament in the first place hear themselves?

In the past few days they have mounted self-serving arguments
against proposed electoral reforms that the major parties look set
to come together to support.

The reforms include caps for how much money wealthy
individuals can donate, caps on the amount candidates can spend in individual electorates to prevent the equivalent of an arms
race, and a $90million limit on what any party can spend at an election – actually less than the
major parties currently spend.

The proposed new laws also include lower disclosure thresholds for donations,
thus increasing the transparency of who makes political donations in the first place.

So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity while using their cash to influence
election outcomes – and the extent to which they can use
their wealth at all will be limited.

The bill will further improve transparency by also increasing the speed
and frequency that disclosures of donations
need to be made.

At present we have the absurd situation in which donations get made – but you only find out the details
of who has given what to whom many months later, well after elections are won and lost.

In other words, what is broadly being proposed will result in much greater transparency and
far less big money being injected into campaigning by
the wealthy.

Teal Kylea Tink claimed the major parties were 'running scared’ with the policy and warned the reform would 'not stop the
rot’

Anyone donating more than $1,000 to a political party, as opposed to $16,000 under
the current rules, will need to disclose having done so.
And how much they can donate will be capped.

Yet the Greens and Teals have quickly condemned the proposed new laws,
labeling them a 'stitch-up’, 'outrageous’ and 'a rort, not a
reform’. 

They have lost their collective minds after finding
out that Labor’s proposal just might secure the support of the opposition.

I had to double check who was criticising what exactly
before even starting to write this column.

Because I had assumed – incorrectly – that these important transparency measures stamping out the influence of the wealthy must have been proposed by the virtue-signalling Greens or the corruption-fighting Teals, in a united crossbench
effort to drag the major parties closer to accountability.

More fool me.

The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system, is being put forward
by Labor and is opposed by a growing cabal of crossbenchers.

It makes you wonder what they have to hide. Put simply, the Greens and Teals
doth protest too much on this issue.

The Greens have taken massive donations in the past, contrary to

The major parties have long complained about the influence the likes of Simon Holmes à Court wields
behind the scenes amongst the Teals. 

And we know the Greens have taken massive donations from the wealthy in the past, contrary to their irregular calls to tighten donations rules.

Now that tangible change has been proposed, these bastions of virtue are running a mile
from reforms that will curtail dark art of political donations.

The Labor government isn’t even seeking for these
transparency rules to take effect immediately, by the way.
It won’t be some sort of quick-paced power play before the next election designed to catch the crossbench out.

They are aiming for implementation by 2026, giving everyone enough time to absorb and understand the changes before preparing for them.

Don’t get me wrong, no deal has yet been done between Labor and the Coalition. I imagine the opposition want to
go over the laws with a fine tooth comb.

As they should – because it certainly isn’t beyond Labor to include hidden one-party
advantages in the proposed design which would create loopholes only the unions are capable
of taking advantage of, therefore disadvantaging the Coalition electorally
in the years to come.

But short of such baked-in trickiness scuttling a deal to get these proposed laws implemented, the crossbench should offer their support,
not cynical opposition, to what is being advocated for.

They might even be able to offer something worthwhile
that could be incorporated in the package.

To not do so exposes their utter hypocrisy and blowhard false commentary about being in politics to 'clean things
up’.

get made. I don’t know if I’ll ever get to make another one… „If this is the last one, I want it to just represent me,”’
he continued.

Joe Aston got the kind of book launch every first time author dreams of
– massive amounts of free publicity online, in newspapers and on TV and radio. 

And it was all thanks to Anthony Albanese’s ill-informed attack on Aston over what
was written in his book, The Chairman’s Lounge – The Inside Story of how
Qantas sold us out.

Despite the resultant terrible publicity – which has led to him being called 'upgrade Albo’ – and calls for an inquiry, Aston told Daily Mail Australia his book is 'not
a hit job on Anthony Albanese’.

Aston insisted he’s 'not trying to get a scalp’, but reiterated that the Prime Minister 'had a
direct line to Alan Joyce’.

The book claims Mr Albanese got 22 upgrades from economy on Qantas flights by personally requesting them from the airline’s then CEO Mr Joyce – which the Prime Minister
has categorically denied.

According to unnamed Qantas 'insiders’, 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese got upgrades for were 'privately funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome, London, Los Angeles and
Honolulu. 

But instead of addressing the claim, Mr Albanese chose to shoot the
messenger and, in turn, shot himself in the foot. 

He said Aston was using the accusations to
sell books and said he was hiding his employment history. 

'I don’t see declarations that he’s a former Liberal Party staffer… I don’t see declarations he’s a former Qantas employee,’ the Prime Minister
said. 

But before the book even gets to the contents page there is a photo of Aston that refers
to him as the then-Qantas corporate communications senior adviser.

And the first chapter of the book reveals that he worked for then-Liberal
MP Bruce Baird, who held the southern Sydney seat of Cook before
Scott Morrison. 

'My professional history is not a secret or not disclosed, it’s in the first line of the first page of the
book,’ Aston said on Tuesday night, just before his book launch. 

Though he was grateful for the free publicity Mr Albanese’s response gave the book, Aston was still 'staggered’ at the untrue claims about
him the Prime Minister made. 

'He’s under enormous pressure and I know, I’ve seen this
many times with public figures and leaders who struggle to see their own part in it,
the terrible circumstances that they create,’ he said.

Aston, who is a former Australian Financial Review columnist, wonders if the Prime Minister 'even listens to advice at this point’.

'All he’s doing is talking around the issue and he’s blaming me and he’s
blaming other MP’s for also taking upgrades
(on Qantas flights).

'He’s avoiding the only thing that he can’t talk about, which is,
did you ask Qantas for confirmed upgrades on your private holidays when you were the
Transport Minister? The answer is „yes” and he’s desperately trying to avoid saying it.’

Smelling blood, Opposition leader Peter Dutton said the Prime Minister should refer himself to the anti-corruption commission over the flight upgrades.

Coming on top of Mr Albanese’s tone deaf purchase of a $4.3million clifftop mansion while so many people are struggling
to pay their mortgage or rent, the latest
blow to his credibility has led to calls for him to resign.

Aston refuses to be drawn on this, though. 

'I never expected this (part of the book) to even this part to
get this far. I really am shocked at how it’s
blown up.

'So to the extent that it has, I would say … anyone who reads the book will learn that this book is not a hit job on Anthony Albanese.
This book is about Qantas. 

'Anthony Albanese is an example of how Qantas influences politicians on both sides of the aisle, Labor,
Liberal, National, you name it. They’ve been doing it for more than a generation.

'They’re the best influence peddler in Australia. I’m not here trying to get a scalp.
That’s not what this book is about and it never was.’

But the conversation Daily Mail Australia had with Aston mirrors the conversations being
had across Australia and eventually winds up back on Mr Albanese. 

'Even I’ve underestimated how fed up the public is with the
freebie mindset of politicians,’ he said.

'And unfortunately for Albanese, he’s been in politics a long time
and that kind of behaviour is quite normalised to him, is what I’ve seen. 

'I mean, he loves the free concert tickets and sitting at the
front row of the Australian Open Tennis. 

'I went to the Australian Open Tennis as a journalist almost every year
for 12 years and he was the only Prime Minister (I saw there).

'Those tickets are worth thousands of dollars to sit in the front
row of the International Grand Slam. He’s the first Prime
Minister who I’ve ever seen do that.

'That to me is a sign that he doesn’t quite get what it looks like to others when he’s on the gravy train. And I think
(the claims in the book are) just another
example of that.’

In Australian politics it’s regular practise for an MP’s travel to be booked in economy,
then someone in their office phones the airline and asks if their flight can be upgraded. 

The difference with the Prime Minister is that 'he had a very direct line to Alan Joyce,’ Aston said.

'The other thing is there’s a difference between an upgrade where it’s in the booking and if the seat’s empty
when the flight closes, you’ll get upgraded.

'This is different. This is a confirmed upgrade
where the ticket is converted and you are guaranteed.
You’re not going to the airport crossing your fingers going „Geez, I hope there is a spare seat”.

'You’re guaranteed. You turn up knowing you’re getting a seat and the only person at Qantas who can issue those
types of upgrades is the CEO. No other executive can do that.

'So it is beyond question that Alan joints authorised these upgrades (for Anthony Albanese).’

Aston enjoyed many upgrades to the pointy end of planes during his time as a travel journalist, and understands the attraction for politicians to get up there. 

'These things are tempting and it’s human nature too. Once you’ve
experienced the front of the plane, it’s very hard to go back.

'For politicians, they run around with all these staff and they’ve got chauffeured cars and they fly in business,
but they don’t get paid like CEOs …

'They’re not in a situation where they can afford to go flying around in the front of the plane on personal
travel. 

'A normal person would say „Therefore I won’t (fly business class). But (for politicians) it’s a culture of entitlement.’

Aston is careful to point out that most people would say politicians are 'very well paid compared to the average worker’.

But that doesn’t stop some MPs from desperately seeking a free ride, whether it’s a flight upgrade, concert tickets or the executive box at sporting events. 

Late on Wednesday night, a spokeswoman Mr Albanese said 'The Prime Minister did not ever call Alan Joyce seeking an upgrade’.

'All travel has been appropriately declared and is a matter of public record.’

In contrast, the scandal currently engulfing Anthony Albanese about his Chairman’s Lounge
membership and that of his ex-wife Carmel Tebbutt, and their son Nathan could bring down the prime minister.

Broadcaster Steve Price revealed he had been a Chairman’s Lounge member
since 2002 during a row before the 2007 election won by Kevin Rudd which let the cat out of the bag about the

The existence of the lounge was so little known back in 2007 that in defending his disclosure of Garrett’s
remark, Steve Price had to explain what the private enclave actually was.

In a first person piece he wrote: 'The Chairman’s Lounge is a separate
frequent flyers lounge away from the crowded normal Qantas
Club. 

'As its name implies, the people given access to it are approved by the Qantas chairman,
Margaret Jackson. 

'I have been a Chairman’s Lounge member since 2002.’

In his opinion piece, Price also revealed TV entertainment reporter Richard Wilkins was
also a member of lounge.

Wilkins had also been inside at the time and was his only witness
to the remark Price said Garrett had made.

Other prominent media figures, such as 60 Minutes reporters, actors
and performers, and well-known writers and sports
people are said to be among the lounge’s exclusive membership of around 6000.

Price went on to defend himself for reporting what
some claimed was a confidential conversation in a
private place, but which exposed him to criticism over his own membership for allegedly promoting Qantas on his radio show.

'Why on earth is Qantas giving a controversial shock jock
membership of its Chairman’s Lounge, which is supposedly to enable our elite
politicians and business leaders some privacy from the hoi polloi?’ demanded Crikey
reporter Stephen Mayne at the time.

'The Chairman’s Lounge is meant to be all about discretion and confidentiality,’ he said, accusing Price of breaking
'a confidence’.

The following year, before he was succeeded as Qantas CEO by Alan Joyce, Geoff Dixon was the
sole gatekeeper of entry into the club’s hushed confines.

Qantas Chairman’s Lounge membership was 'so exclusive that you have to be personally
invited by the airline’s chieftain’, Nine newspapers reported in 2008.

'A marvellous benefit of lounge membership is that the
mega rich and powerful avoid having to mingle with the riffraff
who will be travelling cattle class.

'Having said that, members of the ultra-exclusive club have included Pauline Hanson.

'Another lounge member is Brad Cooper, who is currently enjoying

spokesperson  told Nine: 'We like to retain a bit of mystery. Membership is
by invitation only and it is reviewed periodically.’

Fast forward to today, and nearly every single federal politician in the country has accepted free membership of the
controversial, invitation-only lounge with one even describing it as
an 'entitlement’. 

Qantas and the Albanese government recently denied the 'very, very high-end perk’ gives the airline
a disproportionate level of influence over the country’s politicians.

They were commenting ahead of the launch of the new book
The Chairman’s Lounge by former Australian Financial Review columnist Joe Aston, which has stirred up the controversy. 

A Daily Mail Australia audit of the members’
interest registers – in both Federal Parliament’s House of Representatives and the Senate – revealed almost 93 per
cent of the nation’s leaders have been 'gifted’
membership to the lavish, all-inclusive lounge.

Mr Albanese has defended himself by saying he declared all his benefits in pecuniary interest statements. 

At a press conference this week, he repeated that all of his
upgrades 'have been declared as appropriate. What’s appropriate is transparency.’  

Apart from the PM, members include every one of his 22-person Cabinet, his seven-person Outer Ministry
and all 12 assistant ministers.

Last year it was reported that Australian Competition and Consumer Commission chairwoman Gina Cass-Gottlieb and Australian Securities and Investments Commission chairman Joe Longo and
some of their deputies are members of the Chairman’s
Lounge despite regulating the airline. 

Senior public servants in the club included Department of Prime
Minister and Cabinet secretary Glyn Davis, deputy secretaries Nadine Williams, Liz Hefren-Webb, Rachel Bacon and
ambassador to Beijing, Scott Dewar.

Other Qantas freebies bestowed on members include numerous business class flight upgrades, model Qantas aircrafts, frequent flyer points,

JOHANNESBURG, July 25 (Reuters) – The South African unit
of cigarette maker Philip Morris International Inc opened its
first flagship store in Johannesburg on Thursday,
as it tries to grow demand in Africa for its alternative heated tobacco product IQOS.

The store in Sandton gives Philip Morris access to tourists and
business people from Africa who frequent Africa’s richest square
mile, allowing it to use its retail footprint as a springboard to expand in the rest of the continent.

„If you look at Sandton, it’s the business hub of South Africa and Africa as well so it’s the one place where we need to start with our permanent flagship store,” Philip Morris South Africa Managing Director Marcelo Nico told Reuters at the sidelines of the launch.

South Africa is the first and only market in Africa where Philip Morris sells IQOS, an acronym for „I quit ordinary smoking,” which the company says contains
up to 95% fewer toxic compounds than regular cigarettes.

„We are bringing the first experience of commercializing this technology on the African continent and the objective is, based on this experience over time, roll it out in the rest of the continent,” Nico said.

Philip Morris, maker of Marlboro cigarettes, launched a pilot store in Cape Town in late 2017, which
operated for about a year, to test the market’s appetite, Nico said.
Over time it plans to return to Cape Town with a permanent store.

The firm began selling IQOS in 2017 in South Africa with the affordable 2.4 model and later launched the
IQOS 3 and MULTI in November last year.

Unlike traditional smoked cigarettes, IQOS devices electronically heat tobacco-filled sticks
wrapped in paper just enough to generate an aerosol that
contains nicotine. They are different from e-cigarettes
such as the popular Juul device, which vaporizes a nicotine-filled liquid.

The 160 square meter (1,722 square foot) store’s interior is minimalistic with lounge couches, bright lighting
and an information section, where consumers are shown the different effects of
burnt cigarettes and IQOS through a machine that emits a white cloudy smoke for
IQOS and brownish smoke for normal cigarettes.

Consumers can also hold their phones up to the large picture displays in the
store in order to get detailed information, demonstrations and videos about the product.

An estimated 70% of South African adults who have switched to the product since the launch have
converted fully to IQOS, the company said in 2018.

One such adult is 33-year-old Evans Manyonga, who started using IQOS two years ago because he was
„coughing a lot” from cigarettes and has since converted two of
his friends.

„I don’t smell of cigarettes. I don’t cough. It’s smoother and classier,” Manyonga, who
has been smoking for 10 years, told Reuters at the store’s opening.

Neil Borthwick, who was trying IQOS for the first time
at the launch, said, „you can smoke it anywhere without smoke or ash and it gives you that same satisfaction that you have with a normal cigarette.”

A mother’s body erupted in painful burn-like rashes after she
suffered an allergic reaction to vaping. 

Lisa Santiago-Griggs, from Kingswood, South Gloucestershire, was released this
morning from hospital after being admitted on Sunday.

She claims a reaction to propylene glycol, an ingredient in the e-liquid, left her
feeling like she was 'on fire’. 

The 42-year-old has now shared shocking images of her 'unbearable’
side effects. It is unclear if she went into anaphylactic shock.

was on fire from the inside out.

'It was unbearable and it affected by internal organs,
like my heart rate, blood pressure and lungs.’

She tried a raspberry sorbet flavoured vape.

At around 2am Sunday morning, Ms Santiago-Griggs woke with
an itch. By 4.30am she was 'completely covered’ in a painful rash.

She went straight to Southmead Hospital in Bristol.
Ms Santiago-Griggs said: 'It was starting to blister, and getting serious

She said: 'I’ve never had an allergic reaction to anything before – this was horrible.

'It was a covering my body, very painful, and it felt like my skin was burning from underneath, burning up from the inside.’

Ms Santiago-Griggs took several anti-histamine tablets
to fight the rash but they had no effect.

She went straight to Southmead Hospital in Bristol. Ms Santiago-Griggs said:
'It was starting to blister, and getting serious.

'They took me straight in and I’ve been here ever since.
They are treating me with steroids and I’m on a drip.

'I have to stay in until it’s calmed down and they can work out exactly what is
going on. I am 100 per cent convinced it was the vape.’

She added: 'It’s not like I’ve been out doing anything else.
It was the first time I’d ever had a vape and I didn’t realise it can cause this kind of reaction.

Ms Santiago-Griggs is now calling for a change
in law which would require anyone trying a vape for the first time
to be tested for allergies

She said: 'I’ve never had an allergic reaction to anything before – this was horrible.

'Doing a bit of research, I’ve found that this has been known, but they don’t tell you.

Most people aren’t aware.’

Ms Santiago-Griggs is now calling for a change in law which would require anyone trying
a vape for the first time to be tested for allergies.

She said: 'I’d never vaped or even smoked before so it was
new to me. They just sold it to me and sent
me on my way without any advice of the possible side-effects.   

She wants vape shops to agree to only sell a full vape to someone after they
have tested it and waited 24 hours.

Ms Santiago-Griggs added: 'They do exactly this in the hairdressers to check you won’t
have an allergic reaction to a new hair product.

'So why can’t they do this for vapes?

'I appreciate it works for some and not everyone will have an allergic reaction from vapes, but it
is more common than you think – a quick Google search will tell you.

'But it appears serious allergic reactions like mine due to the product being ingested can’t be treated quickly.
I’ve had 50 hours with no sleep now.

'I’m sure the pictures will get picked apart, but my main concern is getting my story out there.’

She added: 'People need to share this to make stockists advise the customer to sample the
product then come back and buy the next day and purchase if
no reaction.

'You could be in the percentage allergic to an organic product, mixed with fruity liquid called propylene glycol.

'This seems to be the most common one to cause the reaction.’
